Why Is It Called Round Table? The Story Behind Christchurch Round Table
You’ve probably seen the Round Table logo before.
You may have seen it on the side of a Santa Sleigh, at a local charity event, on a fundraising poster or around Christchurch.
But have you ever wondered why it’s called Round Table?
It’s not just a name. The idea behind the Round Table goes back to one of the most recognisable stories in British history and folklore, and the principle behind it is still at the heart of what Round Table is today.
So, why is it called Round Table?
The name comes from the legendary Round Table of King Arthur.
Unlike a traditional meeting table, a round table has no head. There is no "top seat", and nobody is positioned above anyone else.
That simple idea became an important part of the identity of Round Table: everyone has an equal voice.
It doesn't matter what you do for a living, how long you've been involved, or whether you're the newest person in the room. When you're around the table, you're part of the conversation.
And that's still one of the things we love most about Round Table.
The Round Table principle still matters
The world has changed a lot since Round Table was founded.
But the basic idea behind the name hasn't.
Everyone has a voice. Everyone has something to contribute. Everyone belongs.
That doesn't mean everyone agrees all the time, far from it!
It means ideas can come from anywhere, new members can get involved from day one, and nobody needs to have all the answers before they get involved.
For us, that's what makes Christchurch Round Table different.
We're not looking for people who already know everything about fundraising, organising events or community work.
We're looking for people who are willing to turn up, get involved and have a go.

The original idea behind the Round Table was about equality, conversation and giving everyone a voice.
More than 100 years later, we think that's still a pretty good idea.
